Professor Dr. M. Sohel Rahman has over 22 years of experience in research and academia in Bangladesh and abroad. His primary role has been teaching and conducting research as a Professor of Computer Science in Engineering in BUET. However, he also has significant experience in administration as well as industry experience through providing consultancy services to various national projects.

Professor Rahman began his academic career as a lecturer back in 2002, got promoted to Assistant Professor and then to Associate Professor in 2004 and 2010 respectively, before becoming a full Professor back in 2012. He served as the Head of the Department of CSE, BUET during 2016-2018. Earlier, he was in charge of the whole IT Setup of BUET during his tenure as the Associate Director of System and Support wing of IICT, BUET.

Professor Rahman had worked as a Visiting Research Fellow of King’s College London, UK during 2008-2011 and again as a Visiting Senior Research Fellow there during 2014-15. He is a Senior Member of IEEE; member of American Mathematical Society (AMS) and London Mathematical Society (LMS). He is also a Peer-review College Member of EPSRC, UK. He has been honoured as a Distinguished Member of the ACM for “Trailblazing Achievements across Computing Field”. He has also been recognized as a Distinguished Contributor of IEEE Computer Society for his technical contributions to the profession and the society. He is a Fellow of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences.

He received different scholarships and fellowships including Commonwealth Scholarship, Commonwealth Fellowship, ACU Titular Fellowship, University College London-Big Data Institute visiting grant, London Mathematical Society Visiting Grant etc. He is also a recipient of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal and UGC Award. He has led research and development projects funded by British Council, UGC-World Bank, ICT Division, Government of Bangladesh and BUET. He has so far published 140 peer-reviewed international journal papers. Among his notable results are the work on MultiResUNet (an improvement over the U-Net, which is the de-facto architecture for medical imaging segmentation tasks), high dimensional Knapscak problems, sequence alignment problems, data structures and string combinatorics, sufficient conditions for Hamiltoninicity, Machine Learning based predictors in Bioinformatics, and metaheuristics solutions for hard problems.

He has given keynote speeches and invited talks in several international conferences, national events and at different foreign universities. He has also served as Program Committee Chair/Member in several occasions of reputed international conference series’. Dr. Rahman is an Editor of Neural Networks journal, Academic Editor of PLOS One, Associate Editor of BMC Bioinformatics and BMC Research Notes and had edited special issues as guest editors in Theoretical Computer Science, Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications, Journal of Discrete Algorithms, Fundamenta Informaticae etc. He has also served as Program Committee members in a number of conference series’ of international repute. Dr. Rahman regularly writes reviews at Mathematical Review and ACM Computing Review. He currently holds the appointment of a Distinguished Speaker of both ACM and IEEE Computer Society. He has been included in the Stanford/Elsevier list, highlighting the top 2% of the most cited scientists across the globe.

Professor Sohel Rahman regularly serves in national committees relating Computing and Education taking various policy decisions. Examples include the Administrative Committee formed by the honorable High Court of Bangladesh to investigate and propose recommendations to prevent Question Leak in public examinations in Bangladesh; Various Technical Committees related to e-passport projects; etc. He is also involved in several youth activities in computing including ICPC Programming Contests and Informatics Olympiad. He is a member of the Bangladesh Informatics Olympiad Committee (BIOC) and is the incumbent Leader of the Bangladesh delegation at the International Olympiad in Informatics. He is the Chairman of the Sectoral Committee (for CSE) of the Board of Accreditation for Engineering and Technical Education (BAETE), Bangladesh. He is also a Program Evaluator of ABET (USA).

In personal life, Professor Rahman was born to Md. Siddiqur Rahman, a Mechanical Engineer by training and Professor Hosne Ara Begum (deceased), a former Professor of Nutrition at the College of Home Economics, Dhaka. His better-half, Dr. Sara Nowreen is a Professor in the Institute of Water and Flood Management, BUET; their only daughter, Nazaha Izdihar Amatullah, is currently studying as an undergraduate student at the Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia as a W&L Scholar.
