 Brief Resume of Dr. Shahnaz Sarkar

Dr. Shahnaz Sarkar is a distinguished figure in the field of agricultural education and research in Bangladesh. As a Professor (Grade-1) at the Department of Agricultural Botany, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), she has dedicated her life to advancing scientific knowledge, nurturing future scholars, and contributing to the development of sustainable agriculture. Her journey reflects a combination of academic brilliance, leadership, and deep-rooted commitment to societal welfare through agricultural innovation and education.

Dr. Sarkar’s academic path began with her Secondary and Higher Secondary education in Dinajpur and Dhaka, respectively. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours) from Bangladesh Agricultural University, where she demonstrated a strong foundation in agricultural science. She went on to complete her Master’s in Botany from the same institution and further pursued a PhD in Agricultural Science from Gifu University in Japan under the prestigious Monbukagakusho Scholarship. Her international academic exposure enriched her perspective and added significant value to her expertise in agricultural botany.

Her professional career began in 1995 as a Lecturer at the Bangladesh Agriculture Institute. Over time, she held various academic roles across institutions, ultimately joining Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University where she steadily rose through the ranks from Assistant Professor to Professor (Grade-1). Her teaching career, spanning more than 25 years, is marked by dedication and impact. She has played a key role in mentoring students at both postgraduate and doctoral levels, supervising over 30 MS students and 3 PhD students. Her guidance has empowered young researchers to contribute meaningfully to the agricultural sector of Bangladesh.

Dr. Sarkar’s contributions go far beyond the classroom. She has been actively involved in academic administration, having served as Chairman of the Department of Agricultural Botany and as Personal Secretary to the Vice-Chancellor of SAU. These roles underscore her capabilities in academic leadership and institutional governance. Her administrative acumen is complemented by her involvement in various professional and student organizations. Notably, she was elected General Secretary of the Women’s Hall Student Union. Such experiences highlight her leadership qualities and ability to inspire and organize academic communities.

Research is another pillar of Dr. Sarkar’s career. She has authored over 25 research articles published in national and international journals, contributing to the growing body of knowledge in agricultural sciences. Her work spans a broad range of topics within agricultural botany and is characterized by scientific rigor and relevance to real-world agricultural challenges. She has presented her research at numerous conferences and seminars in Bangladesh, Japan, and the UK, thus establishing a strong international presence.
